 There are a lot of personalities, then become famous, that were born or had lived on the shores of Lake Garda.
The main personalities linked to Lake Garda are
Gaio Valerio Catullo, born in Sirmione in 84 b.C. and died in Rome in 54 b.C.; he was a great Latin poet. Catullo is one of the most famous representatives of the school of neoteroi (that is “the new poets”), that do not describe the deeds of the heroes or of the gods, but they are concentrated on thematic linked to simple and daily episodes. The most famous lyrics are those dedicated to his loved woman, Lesbia.
Gabriele D'Annunzio, born in Pescara in 1863 and died in Gardone Riviera in 1938; he was a writer, dramatist and Italian poet, symbol of the decadentism and hero during the First World War. It occupied a central position in the literature and the political life of Italy from 1914 to the moment of the his death.
We owe him the fitting out of the Vittoriale degli Italiani, a villa that contains more than 33.000 books. In the garden of the Vittoriale there is the mausoleum where D'Annunzio has been buried.
